• Syllabus Ancient Civilizations - Mrs. Hamilton 6th Grade

We will be studying a number of ancient civilizations this year, starting with prehistoric man and the fertile crescent, and moving on with ancient Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome.  To end our study, we will explore the ancient civilizations of South America.

While we do have a text, we will access additional sources of information as we explore these ancient civilizations. Hands-on activities, including art, will aid us in our experience and hand-written “narrations” based on articles dealing with various aspects of each civilization will help to cement understanding of these civilizations. Stem projects such as  designing a catapult with simple materials will allow for group interaction and activity focused on specific civilizations. Group research and a Greek gods "campaign" also allow for enjoyable group interaction and presentations. We will try our hand at Chinese calligraphy and create a banner which includes Chinese characters as well as traditional cherry blossom or bamboo painting.  We will also practice our note-taking skills as we read through the text and glean important information. Poetry and other art forms will allow us to delve more deeply into each culture.

I look forward to exploring the ancient world with our students and to the discussions which happily arise whenever we read and learn about different cultures!
