• Freeman High School

Originally built in 1957 to educate 150 students, Freeman High School now serves about 300 students in grades 9-12. Over the years, three additions have been built on to the original school building (1977, 1989) and Vo-Ag building (1980) directly behind the high school. Freeman High School students are educated in these aging facilities, as well as four portable classrooms adjacent to the school.

The proposed capital improvements bond would modernize and expand Freeman High School to bring the school up to current code, house all students within the main building and update critical building operational systems.

    Project Details – High School

What is the current situation at Freeman High School?
    • Outdated safety and emergency systems – no fire sprinklers, inadequate “means of exit” in event of emergency
    • Insufficient electrical system with overloaded circuits
    • Outdated heating and ventilation systems – classroom temperature variations of up to 15 degrees
    • Insufficient air circulation with little or no fresh air in building during winter months
    • Crowded hallways, cafeteria and gym
    • Multiple unlocked entrances into school for student access from portables
    • Inadequate learning spaces for science, music/drama and Vo-Ag programs
    • Aging roofs that leak and continually need repair
    • Poor insulation, single pane windows and old, energy-inefficient doors
How would the bond address these needs?
    • Bring building up to code – including fire sprinklers, smoke detectors, emergency lighting, electrical systems, emergency exits and handicap accessibility
    • New heating, ventilation, cooling system and roof
    • New insulation, energy-efficient windows and doors
    • Additional classrooms to house all students within main school building, eliminating need for portables and improving school security
    • Modernized science classrooms
    • New multi-purpose room and kitchen facility to be used as cafeteria, commons and performing arts space
    • New main gym with expanded seating capacity and handicap accessible bleachers
    • Modernize and retain current main gym as secondary gym
    • Convert current secondary gym to Vo-Ag shop following current safety standards
    • Modernize and retain Vo-Ag building to house maintenance department and equipment
    • Upgrade all interior spaces with wider hallways
    What is the project timeline?
    • If approved by 60% of Freeman School District voters, the high school project would proceed according to the following timeline:
    • May - June 2008: Educational Specifications – develop details of interior spaces including storage, classroom configuration, etc.
    • July – August 2008: Schematic Design – using educational specifications
    • September – November 2008: Design Development – using educational specifications
    • November 2008 – February 2009: Construction Documents
    • March 2009 – April 2009: Bidding & Contact Award
    • April 2009 – August 2010: Construction – Students will remain on campus housed in temporary classrooms
    • September 2010: Modernized High School Opens
